The TSPCN evolved as an initiative out of Tasmania's first Suicide Prevention Strategy, which was launched in 2010. The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Committee oversees implementation of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Strategy (2016 - 2020).
The Strategy identifies primary prevention as a key action area for investment, recognising the importance of supporting communities to address poor mental health, including social connectedness, and building the capacity of community groups to identify risk and provide support and build individual resilience.
The TSPCN was launched in September 2012 as a key initiative in the area of primary prevention. Relationships Australia Tasmania receives funding from the Tasmanian Government to auspice the TSPCN.
The Chair of the TSPCN is a member of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Committee, ensuring a free flow of information between the Committee and the Network.
