Tasmanian LiFE Awards – 2025 Nominee
Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award
The Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award acknowledges the crucial role that communities play in identifying and taking action towards suicide prevention. This award recognises any group or community, whether it’s a sports club, community group, or a hobby group, that works together to prevent suicide. This may involve developing a local plan for mental wellbeing and suicide prevention or organising activities that bring the community together to facilitate social connection and provide opportunities to discuss mental health and suicide prevention.

Knockoffs Run Club

Knockoffs Run Club started in 2020 to bring people together during the COVID-19 pandemic. Andrew, one of the Run Club’s founders, recognised the need to bring people together in a healthy way while working as a nurse at the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he and his colleagues were experiencing the stress on the healthcare sector first-hand. Knockoffs Run Club was created to give his colleagues and friends a way to de-stress and connect, all while staying safely within the guidelines for gathering.
What began as a small group of hospital staff is now a thriving community with more than 500 members. The Club meets every Thursday for a social run, followed by the chance to have a drink and a chat. It’s a regular opportunity for strangers to become friends and gather with other members of their community. The consistent turn-out of regular runners and new faces each week highlights the impact the club has had on its members.
Knockoffs Run Club is not just a space for serious runners. Joggers and people who just enjoy a walk are encouraged to get involved, get outside, get some exercise and make community connections. Thanks to partnerships with local businesses, the club remains free and accessible, allowing everyone the opportunity to reap the mental, physical and social benefits that the Run Club provides to the community.
