Tasmanian LiFE Awards – 2025 Nominee

Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award

The Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award acknowledges the crucial role that communities play in identifying and taking action towards suicide prevention. This award recognises any group or community, whether it’s a sports club, community group, or a hobby group, that works together to prevent suicide. This may involve developing a local plan for mental wellbeing and suicide prevention or organising activities that bring the community together to facilitate social connection and provide opportunities to discuss mental health and suicide prevention.

Men Care Too – North West Mates

Men Care Too North West Mates Collective brings together local and national programs to reach men of all ages in the North West region of Tasmania. These programs help men create and strengthen social connections to improve their mental health and prevent suicide.

As an organisation, Men Care Too seeks to address the social isolation felt by men in unpaid caring roles. Since men don’t often identify with the term ‘carer’, Men Care Too looked for opportunities to connect with a wide range of men to encourage general conversations about caring, help-seeking and managing mental health challenges.

Working together to achieve a shared goal can have a huge impact, and duplicating ideas wastes time and resources. With this in mind, Men Care Too established connections with national initiatives Mr Perfect and The Man Walk to create what is now the Men Care Too North West Mates Collective.

The North West Mates Collective takes a unique approach to suicide prevention by uniting three separate initiatives that share the common goal of fostering social connection for men. The Collective addresses the barriers that stop men from seeking help by hosting free, regular and reliable activities in informal community settings. By working together, the initiatives can have a greater impact, run more activities, and reach more men than any could alone.

The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Community Network acknowledges that we live and work on Aboriginal land, land of the palawa/pakana people of lutruwita (Tasmania). We pay tribute to the Elders past and present and respect the collective ancestry that has brought us all here today. We honour all those who continue caring for country, sharing stories, and upholding rights.
