Tasmanian LiFE Awards – 2025 Nominee

Priority Populations LiFE Award

The Priority Populations Life Award recognises the positive impact by individuals, organisations or community groups that are addressing, preventing or responding to suicidal behaviours in populations and groups disproportionately affected by suicide in Tasmania. They may also be highlighting the gaps and identifying strategies and embedding solutions specifically for people in need. This award highlights those who are culturally sensitive, overcome barriers, promote inclusion and delivers improved outcomes for priority populations.

International Cafe Devonport

International Café Devonport is a welcoming social initiative that brings people together and celebrates the rich cultural diversity of North West Tasmania. Held monthly, the International Café provides a space for people who have migrated to the area to connect with others, share their stories, and make new friends.

People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds face unique challenges, like language barriers. They may still be adjusting to a new culture and may not have social connections in the area. They may not have access to support services or realise services exist. While Tasmania’s population is growing in diversity, there are still gaps in services to meet the needs of CALD communities.

The International Café was created by Esther Campion and Shelly Sharma, who saw the need for a space where people from diverse backgrounds could connect and celebrate cultural diversity. Esther got the idea from a similar group she joined in Norway, which gave her a lot of much-needed support while she settled into a new country.

The International Café is supported by Welcome Cultural Services and is mainly run by dedicated volunteers. The volunteers take pride in creating an inclusive environment where people can bring a plate of food to share and have a hot drink with people from other cultures. Through community connection, International Café Devonport empowers people to seek help, build confidence, and engage with available services, ultimately contributing to suicide prevention by reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Community Network acknowledges that we live and work on Aboriginal land, land of the palawa/pakana people of lutruwita (Tasmania). We pay tribute to the Elders past and present and respect the collective ancestry that has brought us all here today. We honour all those who continue caring for country, sharing stories, and upholding rights.
