Tasmanian LiFE Awards – 2025 Nominee

Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award

The Communities in Action for Suicide Prevention LiFE Award acknowledges the crucial role that communities play in identifying and taking action towards suicide prevention. This award recognises any group or community, whether it’s a sports club, community group, or a hobby group, that works together to prevent suicide. This may involve developing a local plan for mental wellbeing and suicide prevention or organising activities that bring the community together to facilitate social connection and provide opportunities to discuss mental health and suicide prevention.

Project North

Project North work to address complex social issues in the northern suburbs of Launceston. At its heart, Project North understands that for a community to truly thrive, residents must have their voices heard.

The goal of Project North is to amplify and activate community voices and build relationships, local leadership, and lasting change through ongoing engagement with the community. The project focuses on the power of collaboration, with community members working together to build a better future for themselves and those they love. Local businesses and place-based stakeholders also partner with the community to support and develop local leaders. These partnerships make sure people with lived experience of their communities are involved in decision making to try and ease some of the more persistent and complex social issues in the northern suburbs of Launceston.

Project North supports a broad range of initiatives aimed at improving communities. Among many others, it works with people to run and support surveys, projects and events, including events for weeks and days of significance for the local community. It also takes part in mental health and wellbeing initiatives and promotes them to communities to ensure success.

Project North takes a holistic view of wellbeing and recognises that a person’s environment can have an impact on their broader life and wellbeing. Through Project North’s initiatives, residents are empowered to increase their quality of life, their sense of belonging and their mental health and wellbeing.

The Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Community Network acknowledges that we live and work on Aboriginal land, land of the palawa/pakana people of lutruwita (Tasmania). We pay tribute to the Elders past and present and respect the collective ancestry that has brought us all here today. We honour all those who continue caring for country, sharing stories, and upholding rights.
